'Emerald City' season 1 episode 5 spoilers: Dorothy to meet West, the Wizard in 'Everybody Lies'

At its halfway point, NBC's 10-episode take on L. Frank Baum's classic novel series finally brings displaced Kansas native Dorothy (Adria Arjona) face-to-face with the not-so-wonderful Wizard of Oz (Vincent D'Onofrio) —that is, if she survives an initial encounter with the vengeful Witch of the West (Ana Ularu) in the next episode of "Emerald City."

In the episode titled "Everybody Lies," the vengeful and grieving West finally takes great efforts in tracking down the woman who killed her sister, East (Florence Kasumba). And it seems that the first person to have shown her mercy when she arrived at Oz may have played a hand in her capture.

Ojo (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) of the Tribal Free Lands returned in the previous episode of "Emerald City" to knock Dorothy unconscious with a wooden throwing star. Did West enlist Ojo's assistance to hunt Dorothy down so that she can subsequently make the woman pay for murdering the most merciful Mistress of the Eastern Woods? The trailer for the next episode seems to suggest so.

West will try to get Dorothy to cough up the information she needs about East's death by using some enchanted interrogation techniques. However, the Kansas nurse proves herself to be a tough cookie when, in one scene, she even had the gall to tell the powerful witch that she cannot be hurt, apparently drawing confidence from the magic she seems to have inherited from East.

In another scene, West seems to get a taste of Dorothy's power when she seemingly tries to take East's bejeweled gauntlets from Dorothy's hand.

And thus, the interloper, who only wishes to find a way home, eventually escapes West's vengeful clutches and finds her way to The Wizard, who is fresh out of his aid-seeking trip to the Kingdom of Ev. Surprised out of his wits when Dorothy appears with a gun pointed right at him, The Wizard displays the vulnerability of an un-magical man who is afraid to die.

Where would this first meeting lead to? Will The Wizard pull an unexpected blindside and call out his guards to kill the woman he seems to believe to be the Beast Forever? Or will an unexpected alliance be built, especially after Dorothy has had a taste of the witches' wrath?

"Emerald City" season 1 episode 5 airs on Friday, Jan. 27, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
