'Bloodline' season 3 updates, spoilers: Showrunners discuss which direction 3rd season is taking; delayed renewal caused by tax incentive issue?

The third season of Netflix's original series "Bloodline" is still up for renewal and fans are speculating that the July expiration of the tax incentive plan Florida granted to the show could be causing the delay. It should be noted that the series is shot entirely in Florida Keys, and without the tax incentive, it could probably run into a few financial hitches.

Despite "Bloodline's" strong following, Netflix is purportedly considering its value to the company. That plus the unresolved issue of the tax incentives could determine the fate of the series, according to Enstarz. Co-creators Todd Kessler, Glenn Kessler, and Daniel Zelman are hopeful that Netflix would give "Bloodline" season 3 a go.

Uncertainties regarding the series' fate aside, Glenn recently talked to The Hollywood Reporter to tease what viewers can expect from the upcoming season. Kessler said that despite killing off Danny Rayburn (Ben Mendelsohn) in season 2's finale, they want to keep the character a focal point of the story in some way. He didn't say whether Danny would appear as a ghost in the upcoming season, but he did say he would have an influence on all the other characters.

"There was an intimacy of that relationship that led to that killing," he told The Hollywood Reporter, pointing to the dynamic that formed between Danny and John (Kyle Chandler).

John killed Danny in season 2's finale. In this light, Zelman said season 3 could revolve around John revealing darker aspects of his personality as he discovers who he really is. Apparently, John would have an epiphany where he contemplates what teenage Danny told him – to get out and save himself.

"Absolutely a third season will pick up on that idea and what John does with that [and how it affects the family] now that he's taken the action that he's never been able to take in his life: Slough off his responsibilities to the family and look out for himself," Glenn said.

At least the showrunners have plans for the series even as fans await its fate with bated breath.

Meanwhile, the first two seasons of "Bloodline" are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
