'Arrow' season 5 spoilers, plot news: Will Constantine return?
John Constantine (Matt Ryan) won't be returning to Star City anytime soon. Although "Arrow" season 5 has been adding new characters and bringing back some old ones, the occult detective won't be one of them.
During last week's Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, executive producer Greg Berlanti revealed that there are no plans to bring the anti-hero to "Arrow" and to any other shows in the "Flash"/"Arrow"-verse.
"We haven't had any conversations with them about Constantine ... Constantine exists in a certain place in the DC world and universe," Berlanti said at the event, as reported by IGN.
However, he seemed to hint that Constantine could still appear in some form or fashion on "Arrow," or on the other DC Comics television shows.
"They're kind of internally examining what they want to do with that character next," he continued, seemingly implying that The CW shows like "Arrow" haven't closed their doors on Constantine's comeback.
Ryan reprised his role as the demon-warding detective in the fourth season of "Arrow," where he helped resurrect Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) without the bad effects of the Lazarus Pit.
However, Ryan is reprising his role in the "Justice League Dark" animated movie. The actor will provide his voice to Constantine's animated form.
With regard to a live-action comeback, "Arrow" season 5 or any other shows from the DC TV universe might not be the venue for that, at least for now.
Although Berlanti said that Ryan's performance in his big return last season was "terrific," there has not been a discussion yet about a return as big as that.
Also, if co-executive producer Phil Klemmer's statement in a Zap2it interview is anything to go by, Constantine will be fending off demons in "Arrow" soon.
"If this show goes as many seasons as I hope it does, it would be a crime for him not to appear in our universe," Klemmer said.
"Arrow" season 5 will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
