NBA trade rumors: Rondo will 'absolutely' ask for a trade if he remains on the Bulls' bench
Rajon Rondo was healthy when the Milwaukee Bucks clobbered the Chicago Bulls with a score of 116–96, but he didn't play a single second. After the game, Rondo was calm and composed despite the fact that Coach Fred Hoiberg just benched him.
"No, I'm not surprised. Not surprised. It's been a tough season. Certain buttons are being pushed and the Bulls are trying to figure things out," he said (via CSN Chicago). "I'm gonna continue to work, get some work in, play some one on one. Take care of my body, lift and give these young guys as much advice while I'm on the bench," he added.
When the press asked him if he would ask for a trade if he continues to get benched, he didn't shy away from the question. "Absolutely," he stated. After he made the statement, a number of publications reported that it may only be a matter of time before Rondo gets traded.
The Bulls clearly believes that his benching is going to help the team. Rondo is a horrible outside shooter, and he's not the defensive player that he used to be. The Bulls need someone who can spread the floor and having a non-shooting threat on the floor like Rondo isn't helping the team at all.
Robin Lopez is an inside player, and he rarely shoots outside the paint. Taj Gibson can make midrange shoots but he has always been an inconsistent midrange shooter in his career. Rondo's replacement at the starting lineup, Michael Carter-Williams, isn't much of a shooter either. Jimmy Butler and Dwayne Wade can be offensive juggernauts, but they can't play to their full potential either if defenses clog the paint due to the fact that the Bulls lack a legitimate 3-point threat.
Before anyone points out that Nikola Mirotic and Doug McDermott can be the outside threat they need, it should be noted that they are both shooting horribly from downtown this season. But at least they can keep the opposing team honest by hitting the open shots.
Where will the Bulls ship Rondo? Will they buy out his contract?
