Some people will continue to say that the fight may never happen, but the much-talked-about dream boxing match between boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor is getting closer to reality.

In an interview with Showtime's Jim Gray (transcribed by UPROXX), Mayweather said he "absolutely" wants to fight McGregor because he knows that he could make a lot of money if he steps in the ring with the mixed martial artist. "I'm a businessman at the end of the day," he stated.

After he offered $15 million and a cut of the pay-per-view to McGregor, UFC president Dana White made a counteroffer of his own on FOX Sports' "The Herd" talk show (transcribed by The Guardian).

"I'll tell you what Floyd, here's a real offer. I'm the only guy that can actually make the offer and I'm actually making a real offer: We'll pay you $25 million, we'll pay Conor $25 million and then we'll talk about pay-per-view at a certain number. There's a real offer," he said.

Well, Mayweather wasn't amused and he thought the offer was ridiculous. The boxer has already made over a hundred million dollars fighting the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Álvarez.

In the interview with Showtime, he also talked about why he should get a bigger cut of the revenue. "The best thing to do is look up how much money Conor McGregor has made, then look up how much money Floyd Mayweather has made, and then we can make the fight happen," he said.

Mayweather wants $100 million to come out of retirement and face McGregor, but Yahoo Sports' Dan Wetzel correctly pointed out that he would be hard-pressed to find a fight that could net him $50 million even in boxing.

Most people don't think that McGregor would stand a chance against Mayweather in a boxing ring, but there's no denying that this fight would be entertaining. Hopefully, they'll be able to iron out the kinks in the negotiating table.
