N.J. Governor Chris Christie Tells Sandy Heckler: 'Sit Down and Shut Up'
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told a heckler at a recent speech he made to "sit down and shut up."
Christie was speaking in Belmar, New Jersey about the state's rebuilding efforts on the second anniversary of Superstorm Sandy that destroyed several coastal towns in New Jersey. Some, including activist Jim Keady, have criticized the state's slow response to repairing towns hit hardest by the storm.
During Christie's speech, Keady held a sign that read "finish the job" and yelled out repeatedly at the governor such phrases as "do your job."
Eventually, Christie stopped his speech and told the man to "sit down and shut up" as his wife, Pat Christie, looked on from behind her husband. The governor didn't stop there; he continued to engage the heckler by saying: "Yeah, you do yours, too, buddy," in response to demands that the governor "do his job."
"Now, you all know me. So if we're going to get into a debate here today, it's going to get very interesting and very fun," the governor continued.
"I'll be more than happy to have a debate with you anytime you like, guy, because somebody like you doesn't know a damn thing about what you're talking about except to stand up and show off when the cameras are here."
"I've been here when the cameras aren't here, buddy, and done the work. [...] Turn around, get your fifteen minutes of fame, and then, maybe, take your jacket off, roll up your sleeves, and do something for the people of this state."
Keady later told MSNBC that he believes the governor's behavior was "unfortunate" and that Christie "so little respect to the citizens of New Jersey" and to his office "when he acts like he did today."
