The funeral of legendary comedic icon Joan Rivers, who passed away Thursday at the age of 81, will be held in her hometown of New York City, family members confirmed Friday.

Rivers' funeral will reportedly be held at the Temple Emanu-El, the synagogue where Rivers attended. The temple's rabbi, Joshua M. Davidson, told ABC News in a statement that the world continues to mourn the loss of such a comedy legend.

"It is a terribly sad day for all of us. We mourn with her family, friends and all those millions to whom she brought laughter and joy," Davidson said in a statement.

Rivers was pronounced dead on Thursday, shortly after her daughter Melissa made the decision to remove her mother from life support. Rivers had stopped breathing and gone into cardiac arrest on August 28 after receiving a simple throat procedure at a medical clinic in Manhattan.

She was transferred to Mount Sinai hospital and put into a medically induced coma before being moved onto life support.

Several fellow comedians and celebrities have shared their grievances for Rivers on social media. Kelly Osbourne, one of the panelists on Rivers' E! show "Fashion Police," released a statement that read in part: "Joan, thank you for taking me in and loving me as a daughter. I will miss you deeply and will always hear your voice in my head saying, 'My darling get out there and be you!"

Others, including Sarah Silverman, also offered their thoughts on Rivers, who paved the way for stand-up female comediennes and actresses when she first started her career in the 1960's.

"She was a hero to me, and I loved her very much," Silverman said on Thursday night's airing of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

"I think a lot of people, when they die at 81, you go, 'Well, she was 81. She had an amazing life.' But she wasn't done. She, right now, was at her most vital."
