Islamic State Claims It Received U.S. Airdrop With Weapons, Ammunition
According to Islamic State militants, the U.S. accidentally provided them weapons in a recent airdrop.
A recent video released by Islamic State militants claims they intercepted weapons and supplies meant for Kurdish forces in the Syrian border town of Kobani.
According to The Washington Post, a U.S. Central Command spokesman claims U.S. intelligence are looking into the validity of the video. A press release from U.S. officials claims that a U.S. airdrop had been intentionally destroyed by U.S. planes to ensure it had not fallen into the hands of the Islamic State.
"All other resupply bundles were successfully delivered," the press release added.
Out of the 27 bundles of supplies and weapons dropped by U.S. planes, the terrorist organization reportedly got ahold of one cache, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"They are certainly of the kinds of material that was dropped […] so it's not out of the realm of the possible in that regard," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm John Kirby told the BBC. "When we have something definitive that we can provide in terms of an assessment on that we'll do that," he added.
Another anonymous source close to the Obama administration told CBS News that the U.S. will continue to investigate the claims of the video. The cache reportedly included weapons, medicine, and rifles.
"Every indication that we have is that the vast majority of those bundles were successfully delivered to Kurdish forces. We're still working through a complete assessment right now," the source said.
