David Cameron To Apologize To Queen For 'Purring' Comment

Scotland prepares to vote on its independence that would separate it from the United Kingdom this Thursday.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will apologize to the Queen of England for comments he made at the recent U.N. gathering in New York that were picked up by reporters.

Cameron has confirmed that he will apologize to Queen Elizabeth II during one of their upcoming weekly meetings after journalists at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City picked up a private conversation between Cameron and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

During the conversation, Cameron was discussing the Scottish independence vote that favored staying with the United Kingdom. "The definition of relief is being the prime minister of the United Kingdom and ringing the Queen and saying: 'It's alright, it's OK.' That was something," Cameron told Bloomberg. "She purred down the line."

The prime minister has said he is "embarrassed" about his comments and plans to apologize to the queen in person. "It was a private conversation, but clearly a private conversation that I shouldn't have had and won't have again," he told reporters on Thursday.

Along with Cameron's use of inappropriate language when describing the queen, the prime minister also made a diplomatic gaffe in his comments, as the queen's views on politics are supposed to remain impartial and conversations between Cameron and the queen are supposed to remain confidential.

Cameron's comments have been denounced by Scottish lawmaker Dennis Robertson, who called them "crass and incompetent behavior."

Although the queen technically never took sides in the recent Scottish independence vote, she did tell well-wishers while leaving church in Scotland two weekends ago that she hopes Scots will "think very carefully" about their decision to seek independence.
