Hundreds wait in line to attend Hillsong NYC church service
Hillsong NYC leader Carl Lentz shared a photo on social media this week showing hundreds of people lined up to attend a second church service because they could not get in the first one.
Lentz's photo revealed that the people who attend have exceeded the capacity of the building per church service.
"When churches have buildings they own, it's easy to take for granted how convenient it is to simply have meetings! We have never known that.. Every meeting we have ever had, we have to rent a venue. Pay for it. And it's never big enough!" Lentz wrote on Instagram.
He said that he had heard of people who left Hillsong NYC for smaller churches without realizing that smaller churches also wanted growth.
"I refuse to be a Christian that asks to be delivered from my own prayer requests.. 'God bring revival to NYC!!' And then when He does, resent what I used to rejoice about.. No way," he added.
Lentz hoped that the church would have its own building in the future and expressed his gratitude to the staff and the people who attend the services.
Hillsong NYC is a branch of Australian Hillsong Church founded by Brian and Bobbie Houston in 1983. A documentary, "Hillsong: Let Hope Rise," featuring the worship band Hillsong United was released earlier this month.
Around 30,000 people attend the services at Hillsong NYC every week. The church has attracted the attention of various celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez.
Lentz stated in the past that Hillsong NYC's approach is different from those of other churches.
"In church, people treat you like you have to change or else," Lentz said in a 2014 interview with NY Daily News. "Our approach is, 'We love you, nothing else,'" he continued.
